Nearly everyone has career goals to achieve by a certain age. However, it may seem impossible trying to achieve these goals, especially in light of job shortages and layoffs in certain industries. It can feel like miles between where you are and where you want to be. Or it could be that you don’t have a clue about where you’d like to end up. It could also be that you’re in between careers and you’ve had a change of heart about what you’d like to do when you grow up.
Whatever the case may be, there are some small things that you can do right now for your career that can make a monumental difference later on. Remember, it’s all about baby steps.
Get Outside of Your Comfort Level
Many people fear change and they don’t know where to start when creating a new goal. They may also be fearful of new people and situations. To overcome these challenges, you will need to step outside of your own comfort level to connect with other people. Learn to be an effective networker. Start out on social media and then graduate to networking with people in person at local business mixers. These can all be career building opportunities for you. In the meantime, you’ll be developing your social skills that will elevate you in the workplace later on.
Try a New Job on for Size
Did you know that you have choices about your career? That’s right. You do not have to settle for the same types of jobs over and over again. You also do not have to be stuck in a dead-end career. Take the time to apply for positions with your regional staffing agencies and let them know that you are ready for a new experience. Tap into all of your other skills by trying a temporary job on for size. You may find something you really enjoy in an unexpected place.
Get Some Education Under Your Belt
The best investment that you can make in your career is an education. It doesn’t have to be elaborate like a college degree. You can start out small by taking some online classes that lead to certifications. Or you may want to check with your local Workforce Development Office to find out if you’re eligible for career related courses. For example, you could learn how to improve your resume. Every time you learn something new it elevates your perspective and helps you to see things more positively. Getting some education under your belt can also help you to feel more confident so that you can reach your summit.
