Qualities to Look for in Top Employees

July 18th, 2014

When a candidate walks through the door, do you know what qualities or traits to look for that may set them apart as a great hire? It’s a general rule that hiring managers and human resource officers alike need to have a good idea of what sets the best employees apart from a bad hire. A good employee is high producing and becomes an asset to your company. A poor hire results in a lot of headaches. Skills and personalty traits should be your primary concern when evaluating a candidate.

To help you, we have put together a list of the best items to look for in candidates, and in top employees,  so you know which ones are worth the effort. Some employees make sure they become indispensable to their employers, therefore identifying these qualities now can help you plan for future promotions and leadership roles within your organization.

Track Record of Accomplishments
A company’s top employees will have a track record of accomplishments or a proven ability to get the job done, no matter the scope or difficulty of the project. Instead of companies rewarding employees who stay late at night or who work on weekends, make sure you recognize employees who reach goals or achievements. Companies want to see employees who provide strong work, not an incredible amount of hours worked.

Top Employees Have Integrity
The top employees in your company will have a ton of integrity. He or she will be strong-willed, tenacious when solving problems and curious all at the same time. A top employee will also need to have integrity of action. This means that he or she will do what they say. They will keep their promises and they will walk their own talk. These top employees are ones who companies will want to go to battle with in the business world.

Little to No Drama
Another way to figure out who your top employees are is by looking at the drama in the office. If you have employees that are surrounded by little or no drama, then they might be top-notch workers for your company. Employees who are followed around the office by a black cloud will not be top employees. Those who regularly speak poorly of co-workers, superiors and the company in general will also not be top employees. The less emotional employees in your office will be among the top workers that you have on the staff.

Genuine Passion
Top employees at companies will exhibit genuine passion each day they are on the job. Employees who display genuine passion for what they do will rub off on those around them. For instance, a genuinely passionate employee will be able to talk others around him or her into doing a better job on a project or when completing specific tasks.

No Surprises
A top employee will not let any surprises sneak up on them at the office. They do this by looking around the corner and planning ahead. When an employee can plan for the future, or worry for the future, they will never be surprised while on the job. They are regular organizers, take the lead, and proactively manage their own careers. Look for this in candidates and among the employees you already have on board.
