How to Remain Focused and Positive During Job Search Rejection

The job search can be soul crushing to the point of despair. The longer you wait to hear back from companies, the increasing number of rejections you receive, and the more time spent waiting can push you to your breaking point. After several weeks or months, it’s nearly impossible to stay positive. Instead of letting the weight of it bring you down, here are three tips to help you remain focused and positive while facing job search rejection

Commit to Persevering

The first step to take when all hope seems lost is to persevere. You can’t let the job search beat you. Focusing on the past instead of the opportunity ahead of you can make waiting any longer impossible, but you can do it.

Think about times in your past when you’ve overcome challenges. Give yourself pep talks focused on what you’ve accomplished. Build your perspective that, like other great things you’ve experienced in your life, sometimes they take time. Drown out the voice of doubt with the reassurances you know to be true.

Survivors of disaster frequently claim they stayed alive because it became a sort of game – they refused to give up. The goal instead was to win by strategy, overcoming every obstacle using their brains. Your goal is to win the job search, and you will.

Focus on What You Can’t Control

Frequently the feelings of anxiety and being overwhelmed come from trying to take control of something you simply cannot. Giving up control is challenging for most people, but there’s a peace that comes in recognizing you can only do what you can do. Instead of letting yourself focus on everything you wish could happen or would change, look at your job search through the lens of what you can actually do and don’t let anything outside that circle of control stress you out. Do your best and let go of what you can’t control.

Don’t Do It Alone

It may seem like the job search is a solo experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of facing every rejection alone, try finding and talking to a mentor. Not only can they help you advance and grow in your career, they’ll help you weather the storms using their own experience as a guide.

Another option is working with an employment agency. The right one will help you navigate the job search by finding the opportunities that meet your goals, all while helping you develop professionally.
