The Steps Every Employer Should Take to Build Trust in the Office

March 21st, 2017

Everyone in an office must trust one another, and trust you as their manager, if the office is expected to succeed. This is a basic fact of business. One thing to remember, though, is that trust is not a static thing. It is “an evolving thing that ebbs and flows,” according to psychology professor David DeSteno. In other words, trust is something that you as a manger must constantly be working towards. How can you do that?

Eight Drivers of Trust

The Jacobs Model outlines eight main drivers of trust, or eight things that you must give your employees if you expect them to trust in you and the company. The first step in developing trust is to assess how many of these drivers you are giving your employees. Are there any you need to work on?

  1. Belonging and Connection – employees must feel like they are an important part of the team
  2. Voice and Recognition – you should encourage your employees to share their ideas, and recognize/reward them for their contributions
  3. Significance and Position – people must feel that they are valued by the company
  4. Fairness – each member of your team should feel that they are being treated fairly
  5. Learn and Challenge – employees who are challenged and given room to grow are more productive and more trusting of their managers
  6. Choice and Autonomy – avoid micromanaging your employees; give them room to make their own decisions
  7. Security and Certainty – workers who are constantly worried about losing their jobs are not going to be productive
  8. Purpose – understanding their purpose in the organization will help team members work independently

Be Passionate and Compassionate

Two key qualities in an effective leader are passion and compassion. Your employees will see if you are passionate about your work, and it will help them trust you to do what’s best for the company. Showing compassion for individual employees will help them trust you to do what’s best for them.
