4 Ways to Make Sure You Show Up to Work on Time When You Don’t Have a Reliable Car

February 10th, 2017

If you don’t currently have a reliable car, you know how frustrating it can be. Especially if you are looking for a new job. If only you could get a job, you would be able to afford a reliable car, but it’s hard to find a job if you don’t have a car! Remember, it is illegal for an employer to ask if you own a car. What you will hear often in interviews, and see on applications, is the question, “Do you have reliable transportation?” This is actually a very different matter, because you don’t need a reliable car to have reliable transportation.

Public Transportation

Public transportation might seem intimidating at first, but there are many tools available to help you get the hang of it. For example, Google Maps has public transportation schedules for many cities. Using Google Maps, you can find timed, step-by-step directions which include walking and wait times. This is extremely useful for planning your route, and can help you get to work (or to your job interview) on time.

Your Own Two Feet

If the local public transportation is not very reliable, you might be better off walking or riding a bike. This may limit your job opportunities to businesses located very close to home. But, walking or riding will make sure you are always in control of when you leave and arrive at work. If you live in a city with a bike share program, like Portland’s BIKETOWN, you don’t even need to own your own bike!

Carpooling

Whether it’s someone you know giving you a lift, or a carpool service, this is another way to get to work without your own car. Ask around to see if friends or family would be willing to help you out while you save up for a car. Or, if you don’t plan on buying a car, look online or put out a classified ad to find a local carpool.

Work From Home

Not all jobs are suited for telecommuting, but if you are able to work from home, this is a surefire way of always being on time! You might choose to limit your job search to telecommute jobs. Or, if you are already employed but having a hard time finding reliable transportation, talk to your boss about the possibility of working from home.

So if you are looking for a job, remember that reliable transportation can include walking, carpooling, and public transportation. And while there may be many employment agencies in Duluth, GA, Staffing Resources is the one that really cares about our candidates.
