It’s Time to do a Work Detox | How to Regroup and Refocus for 2017

January 27th, 2017

For many people, now is the time of year for resolutions, new goals, and fresh starts. The new year is a way to mentally draw a line in the sand, making it easier to begin a new journey. You may have new years resolutions related to fitness, family, or fun. But now is also a great time to review career goals and refocus on your work. The key to this work detox is to regroup and refocus.

Step 1: Regroup

Another word for “regroup” is “reorganize.” The words imply that organizing your goals just one time isn’t enough. You have to reorganize, or regroup, each year to make sure that your goals are still applicable. Consider what you have done over the past year to reach your goals – what worked and what didn’t work.

Don’t dwell too much on the negative, or you risk becoming discouraged. Rather, think about how you can learn from your mistakes to do better next time. And think about what you’ve done right, and how to replicate that success.

Step 2: Refocus

Once you’ve regrouped, going through your goals and organizing them by adding or removing tasks as needed, it’s time to refocus. This means taking steps to align your career with your goals.

  • Have you gotten off-track, maybe taking a new job or promotion that isn’t helping you achieve your career goals? It may be time to start looking for a position that allows you to focus on your goals a bit more.
  • Is there any part of your workflow that can be delayed, automated, delegated, or deleted?
  • Is your to-do list out of control? Focus your efforts by prioritizing each item and working on the most important things first.

Whether your new year work detox means finding a new place to work, or just making work more efficient, it will be well-worth the effort to regroup and refocus for 2017.
