Trying to find the perfect job while unemployed can be very upsetting and destroy your confidence. Things can get pretty bad the longer you are unemployed. Frustrations can mount when you send out hundreds of resumes, but continue to receive rejections or don’t hear anything back from the company at all.
Did you know that there are some common mistakes that unemployed persons make (and don’t even realize) when looking for work? We discuss four of them in this article.
Mistake #1 – Missing a Solid Goal
If you wake up in the morning, throw on your clothes, and walk out the door thinking you will find a job, you have a long-shot at succeeding. You need to have a solid goal in your search for a job. Identify the industry in which you want to work, the position that best suits your experience, and then take note of the companies that can provide these opportunities. Applying aimlessly for jobs that you may or may not be experienced for will get you nowhere in your job search.
Mistake #2 – Generic Resume Gets You Rejected
Many job seekers like the idea of having a generic resume saved on their computer because it allows them the ability to apply for hundreds of jobs in just a matter of minutes. The only work they need to do is attach it to an email and hit send. The painful truth here is that a generic resume will cause you to be rejected from those jobs. Tailor each resume according to the job for which you are applying and make sure it is as descriptive as possible.
Mistake #3 – Wasting Time on Internet Job Boards
Internet job boards are very convenient, but they can also be a waste of your time. For the most part, a large chunk of jobs posted on internet boards are generic positions that pay entry-level salaries. Some are also expired by a large chunk of time, which means that wasting your time reading the posting has cost you the chance to apply for another job. Instead of using internet job boards, build a network of contacts using face-to-face communication. Get to know people and learn their tendencies for hiring employees.
Mistake #4 – Being TOO Enthusiastic During a Job Interview
If you are going on job interview after job interview and are still being rejected from positions, you might be exhibiting too much enthusiasm. That’s right. A show of over-confidence or even sheer desperation during an interview can lead to interviewees appearing arrogant or that they have ‘fake’ personalities. Recruiters often shy away from candidates like this because they seem shifty.
There is nothing wrong with being confident during a job interview, but don’t take it too far or you could find yourself unemployed for quite some time. You can also swing too much to the other side of the pendulum; not exhibiting enough confidence. Try to find a middle ground that satisfies the interviewer.
