However, it can also be a bit overwhelming as you walk in and see all the smiling faces of recruiters eager to talk to you. To get the most out of a career fair in your community, here are some tips for effective networking so you can get closer to the job of your dreams.

Perhaps one of the best activities you can participate in as a job seeker is a local career fair, especially if it’s being hosted by a company in your industry. Here are some ways to maximize your time there and network with the right people.

  1. Communicate your value. You’ve got a lot to offer a potential employer, but does this translate well when you are speaking to recruiters? Just as you would with your resume, you’ll need to highlight your strengths as you speak to others. Talk about your work and educational background with a 30-second elevator pitch, and then go into detail with recruiters who are interested in you.
  2. Present yourself professionally. The impression that you make in the first minute someone meets you will set the stage for your professional image. Therefore, you will want to dress for success in conservative business attire, well-manicured, a polished handshake and with direct eye contact.
  3. Research participating companies. Because job fairs are normally advertised in advance, you have the advantage as a job seeker. Why? You can learn more about the companies before you head to the event by visiting each corporate website. Learn about the industries, corporate cultures, and list of openings so you can highlight your suitability as a candidate when talking with the recruiters.
  4. Create a list of talking points. There’s nothing more embarrassing than trying to make small talk with people you’ve never met before. Make this easier on yourself and the recruiters at the job fair by having at least a few interesting talking points to bring up in conversation. The idea is to use this time to build rapport and connect with a few recruiters who will want to ask you in for an interview.
  5. Ask career relevant questions.  The entire point of going to a job fair is to find out more about the assignments available with local companies. To prepare, bring a list of at least 5 questions you can ask each recruiter that are relevant to your career goals. Use open ended questions to dig deeper and ask if you can follow up by phone after the event.
