5 Ways to Save Time on Your Commute to Work

September 6th, 2018

People may do different jobs, but the daily commute is something that connects everyone. At some point, you’ve probably appreciated the solitary moments and been enraged at all the traffic. Usually, the commute is something you can’t control, yet that doesn’t mean you don’t have options. Instead of letting the back and forth get the best of you, try these five suggestions to save yourself time as well as wasted minutes:

Get rid of it completely

Naturally, the easiest way to save time on your commute is to simply stop commuting. With remote work becoming more and more common, it might be time to consider giving it up altogether and staying home where you aren’t fighting everyone else traveling during rush hour.

If you aren’t looking to find a new job, think about what options you might have for telecommuting from your current position. Discuss the matter with your manager to see if you can at least escape the commute a few days a week.

Explore new options

It’s easy to get stuck in the way you go to and from work, but it might not be the most efficient. Perhaps at different times of the day, other routes are better. Bring some adventure into your daily travels and explore new ways to go. You can either wing it or use a GPS app that indicates the fastest route at the current time.

Be productive

Instead of being frustrated about the wasted time, try using it to your advantage. Focus on your tasks for the day and brainstorm ways to solve any problems you’re encountering at work. Make a mental to-do list and prioritize the most important tasks, so when you arrive at work, you’re ready to get started. On the way home, spend time reviewing your day and decompressing. This will keep you from thinking about work and being distracted when you should be relaxing.

Unplug

Maybe your mental preparation looks more like relaxation than work. Rather than think about work, try turning off everything and focusing on the silence around you. You deal with calls, emails and alerts all day, meaning this time both to and from can be your escape to some level of peace.

Find a good podcast

With so many amazing podcasts in many categories to choose from, this is an easy way to keep your mind moving, stay up-to-date with events, and be entertained during your commute.
