Why You Should Still Apply For That Job…Even if You’re Underqualified!

May 23rd, 2018

When you begin looking for a job, you usually have an idea of what kind of position and responsibilities you want in your next position. You read through post after post until suddenly you discover one that matches, minus one small snag – you technically aren’t qualified.

It seems like you have the right experience to do the job well, but based on what’s listed you aren’t supposed to apply. While this can be disheartening, it doesn’t necessarily mean to move on without consideration.

Should You Still Apply?

When an employer lists what they expect, it’s more in an effort to weed out candidates who definitely aren’t fit for the position. Usually, it isn’t an exact list that must be matched. In some cases, you might still have what it takes. Instead of focusing on what it lists exactly, figure out where you do measure up and compare your experiences.

This is where you need to be honest with yourself and decide if you’re actually underqualified or if your past experience qualifies you, even if it isn’t included on their list.

Sell What You Have

If you review your experience and decide you can do it, you’ll need to sell your experience as an alternative for what they list. The first place to start is with your cover letter. Connect your past work to the current position and explain why you’re able to do the job, despite not matching their requirements.

Beyond that, you’ll need to go the extra mile to stand out and show you’re the right person for the job. Attach additional materials to your application, like a plan to help their company based on your research or an initiative to take it to another level. The interview will be the easy part for you to show off what you can do, but you need to work to get in the door, first.

Work With a Recruiter

Another way to bridge the gap is working directly with a recruiter. Often, staffing agencies have relationships with companies and advocate directly for you. This will help you get past an initial rejection based on an overview of your qualifications.
