Just Looking At Your Resume…Would You Hire You?

April 4th, 2017

Try to be objective here. Take a look at your resume. If you were in charge of hiring, and this resume came across your desk, what would you think? Would you hire you, just based on this resume? If your answer is unsure, use these four tips to clean up your resume and make it more attractive to real hiring managers.

Triple-Check Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation

“HR reps equate types and errors with laziness,” reads an article from Business Insider. Don’t rely solely on your computer’s spell-check. If grammar and punctuation aren’t your forte, make sure to have a friend or family member review your resume and point out any errors.

Avoid Tables and Images

These days, many companies will use applicant tracking systems to sort through resumes, before a hiring manager ever sees them. Using tables and images to display important information might look nice to a human eye. But it can confuse tracking systems, and might cause your resume to be automatically filtered out.

Tailor the Resume to the Job

Every resume you send out should be unique to the company and position. Tailoring your resume doesn’t need to take a lot of time. Look at the job description, and pick out a few key phrases that match your qualifications well. Try to incorporate those phrases, or similar wording, in your resume. Use specific achievements to show how you meet those qualifications.

Make it Easy to Read

Recruiters and hiring managers spend an average of six seconds looking at each resume (source: Business Insider). That means that, if you want your resume to be noticed, you need to make it easy to scan through in six seconds or less. Dense blocks of text are hard to scan, and easy to skip over. Bullet points, headings, and lists are much easier to scan in a short time. Bold, italicize, or underling key points to make them stand out. And put the most important information at the top.
