How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone at Work to Become a Better Leader

September 9th, 2016

Nearly everyone wants to be a better leader at work. It’s what gets people noticed for promotions and greater opportunities in Atlanta. If you have found yourself at that point in your career then you might be considering ways to change things up to improve your leadership skills. This requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. If you’re ready to be a much more effective leader and someone whom others look up to, here are some ways to begin testing the waters of a brand new outlook.

Take a good hard look at your strengths and weaknesses.

Every individual has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses. It’s comfortable to focus only on your strengths, but it’s uncomfortable to focus on your weaknesses. Take the time to inventory your skills, preferences, personality, likes and dislikes to determine what your weaknesses are and how you can improve yourself. You may want to start becoming more active physically or you may want to start stepping out of your office more often to interact with your peers. Learning a new skill can also help you improve upon your weaknesses.

Try a new assignment or project to challenge yourself.

Another way to get out of your comfort zone and see what you are really made of is to take on a temporary assignment or a new project at work. This can often challenge you and inspire you to be a better person. It could also help you to hone your work skills such as time management and organization.

Start being authentic at work, instead of being a people-pleaser.

How often have you heard yourself say “yes” to someone and then resent the extra work or effort later on? Stop being a people-pleaser and start being more authentic at work. This means being true to yourself and only taking on the tasks and projects that honor your skills. Become a subject matter expert and you will be seen as a leader vs. being stretched too thin trying to do everything for everyone else.

Start contributing to the industry on a higher level.

The industry you work in needs great minds. Therefore, you can be a contributor to the success of your industry by becoming a thought leader and being more active in the community. Join a couple of business networking groups to promote your organization and the industry. Get involved with industry associations in GA where you can make a difference. Stand out by contributing content to industry publications.
