During your search for a new career, you may come across a job that matches some but not all of your skills. Should you take a chance and apply for this job even though you are not a 100% fit? It’s important to understand how to approach a job like this in order to put yourself into the best possible position to be considered.

On the one hand, you do want to present yourself as a strong candidate. On the other hand, you do not want to elaborate or make up anything in regards to your skills. If you’d like to take this chance and apply for the job that’s slightly outside of your skillset, read on.

Bring to the forefront your best skills / experience that relate to the job

You’ll want to create a strong case for your ability to handle a job like this. While you may not have all the skills listed in the job advertisement, your career experience adds up and you could still be a great candidate. Think back to certain situations in past jobs where you were able to solve problems, learn something new, and perform well under pressure.

Be honest, but state your desire to achieve in the position

It’s okay to mention that while you may not meet all of the requirements of the job, that you do meet many of them and that you are dedicated to working hard to prove your worth. Let the hiring manager know you are willing to take classes towards achieving the desired skills. Ask for a chance to interview to explain why you will be a great fit for this role. Be honest, but be persistent in a professional way.

Prove your skills through assessments

Work with your staffing agency to take a series of workforce assessments to provide concrete proof that you have the right skills and personality for this job. Ask your recruitment agent to pitch you to the company and provide a copy of the assessments.

Provide references as part of your campaign

Gather your best professional reference letters, your recommendations left by colleagues on your LinkedIn page, and any other written recommendations that bolster your case. Submit a few of these to the hiring manager along with your strong cover letter and resume that shares your best qualities.
