Refocusing Your Job Search as 2016 Begins

December 14th, 2015

There is never really an ideal time to embark on a new job search, but things seem somehow tougher when the holiday season rolls around. This time of year is stressful enough without having to think about landing a new job, too. On the positive side, many companies are starting to gear down for the end of the year, which means you may have a little time to polish up that resume and start to really think about where it is you want to go with your career.

A new year can represent new beginnings, so let’s look at how you can refocus and prepare to go after that new job in 2016.

Evaluate Where You Stand

It is not uncommon for people who have just lost a job to feel as though they need to get into something new right away. While it is good to get right back on the horse, you might quickly realize that you are on the wrong one after a short time on the job. It really is important that you take time to assess where you are right now, and where you would like to be moving forward. This is not just about the type of job that you want, but also the type of companies that you would like to work for.

Get Off the Computer

The internet has made it easier than ever to search for jobs and submit resumes, but there is still very much a human element involved in the hiring process. Potential employers don’t really get to know the real you when looking at a resume or online profile, so look for opportunities to get out there and do a little networking. Make an appointment with Staffing Resources to talk with our recruiters about your career goals. It’s amazing how many jobs you land because of a little extra effort to connect with people.

Maximize Your Job Search Time

It’s important to understand that not every hour of the day has to be spent searching for a new job. This is the fastest road to total burnout, and you cannot be expected to put your best foot forward for an interview or follow up call if you are running on empty. Devote the hours of the day when you have to most energy to actively looking for employment.

Use your less productive hours to research companies and perform other tasks that don’t require you to be on high alert. Being unemployed can start to make you feel a little down and depresses, so make sure that you also devote some time each day to looking after yourself and staying upbeat an healthy. An interview call can come at any time, so always feel as though you are confident and ready to go when that telephone rings.

Stay Positive

There is a lot to be said for positive thinking, and there is definite proof that the law of attraction actually exists. What that means is that if you continually think positively and act in a positive manner, good things will happen. Get in the habit of imagining that good things will happen, and you can bet that they eventually will.
