How Important is Happiness in the Workplace?

May 29th, 2015

Employee engagement and happiness are some popular buzzwords among human resources professionals. Why is the happiness of employees so important?

Happiness in the workplace is important today for a variety of factors. One of those factors is that HR managers and company officials know they will experience better profitability when employees are happy at work. Happy employees will work better with others, enjoy their jobs, come to work with more energy, make better decisions, learn better and be more creative.

Here, we will talk about how important happiness actually is at the workplace and what to do to find out if your employees are working at this level.

Find Out Why Employees Aren’t Happy

The first thing you need to do when you realize happiness is important in the workplace is to find out why your employees are not happy. Is it that you do not encourage happiness at the office? Are you overwhelmed as a manager and don’t view happiness as something that should be at the top of your to-do list? Do your company policies and values fail to align with happiness-promoting items? If any of these questions can be answered, then you need to take a step back and find ways to get happiness into your workplace.

Happiness Breeds Productivity

When your employees are happy at work, their productivity will increase. Unhappy employees will not have the energy to get their work done, will slack off, will cause issues with co-workers and will hurt the culture of the office. Happy employees will love coming to work each day, which means their production levels will be high. Companies should empower their employees, encourage them, listen to their ideas and show appreciation for them. When you exhibit all of these, your employees will be happy at work.

Productivity Breeds Profitability

As you can see, happiness at work is very important because it breeds productivity. Then, productivity breeds profitability. The bottom line here is that your company’s profits will be directed related to the happiness of your employees. If your employees are happy, they will be productive. If they are productive, your company’s profits will benefit by increasing. So, if you don’t care about your employees’ happiness for their own sake, take into account the success of your company. The happier your employees are, the more success your company will experience.

How to Make Employees Happy

How can you make your employees happy? You can do a couple of different things aside from what was discussed in the previous section of this post. Consider providing the office with a snack once per week or a nice lunch every Friday. This will encourage co-workers to bond with each other and show your employees that their time and efforts are valued. You could also start Monday morning meetings by watching a funny video online that is appropriate for the office.

The fact of the matter here is that happiness is very important in the workplace. You must make sure your employees are happy if you want your business to succeed.
