Avoid These Habits in Your Hiring Process

October 29th, 2014

There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind during the hiring process. You do not want to do any of the things mentioned in this post or else you will have trouble securing an offer of employment. Do not overwhelm the employer by doing any of the things mentioned, but instead, try to do the opposite as much as possible.

Excessive Follow-Up with the Employer

There is absolutely nothing wrong with following up with a recruiter or a hiring manager, but making repeated calls or sending multiple emails is not helping your hiring process. If a recruiter or hiring manager tells you when you will hear back from them following an interview, it is best to wait until then to make contact again outside of sending a thank you note or thank you email. Do not inundate them with phone calls, messages or emails asking when the next steps will occur. This will only hurt your chances at landing a job.

Lack of Honesty

You need to be as honest as possible with recruiters or hiring managers during the process. Telling even a little white lie can backfire on your job search. Hiring managers will check your references, contact former employers and look into your academic background. Everything on your resume needs to be true or else the hiring process you are involved in will not be successful.

Failing to Meet Set Requirements

If you apply for a job, but do not meet the set requirements, it is not a good idea to provide a long answer to an interview question about these requirements. It is also not a good idea to lie about your skill set or the requirements you have. When you do this, you are telling the interviewer that you are not prepared for the job or that you have not been listening to their questions.

Contacting a Client Directly

During the hiring process, you need to only speak with a recruiter, if you are using a staffing firm to find a job. Should you be going this route, you need to refrain from contact the client directly. When you do this, you break the trust of the recruiter and make yourself look bad to the client. Making a move such as this gives you a look of desperation and can put an end to the hiring process for that position almost immediately.

The longer you are without a job, the more desperate you will become in your efforts to secure an offer of employment. Never commit any of the hiring process offenses mentioned in this post or else you will continue to struggle in finding a job.
