Why You Get Interviews but Not the Job

July 25th, 2014

In what has become a common occurrence, some job seekers are sitting down for multiple job interviews, but are having trouble securing actual job offers. This can be a highly frustrating experience, but one that can be resolved with a smart interviewing strategy. If you are going through this, there may be some factors you can overcome. Here, we will discuss some of them. If any of these items seem familiar to you, consider changing how you interview or how your resume is written so you can secure a job offer the next time you interview for a job.

Lack of Enthusiasm
One of the main reasons a candidate will not receive job offers despite being called for multiple interviews is the fact that they showed a lack of enthusiasm during the interviews. Even if you genuinely want to work for the company, and say it multiple times, if you do not have any enthusiasm in your words or actions, it will not bode well for you. Candidates who might not be as qualified as you will receive the job offer if they exhibit enthusiasm when being interviewed for the job.

Get the Interviewer to Talk
When a job interview turns into a question-and-answer session, it will be too much about the job candidate and not much about the interviewer or the company. You never want to be the only person talking during the interview. Instead, make it a point to get the interviewer talking as much as you are. This will let him or her know how interested you are in the company and what it has to offer. Always ask the interviewer about any concerns, issues or goals they have for the right candidate. Then, you can provide experiences from your career that handles these three items.

Resume Gap or Unemployment
Another killer when it comes to a lack of job offers is having a gap in your resume or a long period of unemployment. If this is the case, you need to proactively tell the interviewer this when sitting down in the office. Do not wait for the interviewer to ask why there is a gap or why you were unemployed. If you let this occur, it will look like you were trying to hide it and this will not help you land the job.

Failure to Ask the Right Questions
Many interviewers base the success of an interview on the questions asked by the candidate, not the answers they provide. Prior to the interview, research the company and come up with some very poignant questions to ask the interviewer while sitting in the office. If the questions hit home they will prove to the interviewer that you think outside the box and know what it takes to get the job done. Many job candidates will be hired based on the questions they ask in the interview.
